WHY T.I.C.E.P.

Parent involvement is perhaps the most important component of a child's education however more effort must be made to facilitate communication between the teacher and the parent.  Since we know good teacher parent communication is essential to increase parent involvement, NCFBS developed the T.I.C.E.P. program employing the latest technology to provide teachers with a method to make daily contact with all parents a simple process.

Recent studies indicate that the more actively involved a parent is in her child's school life, the more the child excels. When parents and teachers work together, a child has a team of adults who are committed to bringing out his best. With T.I.C.E.P., parents and teachers can seamlessly support each other in ways that keep this goal in mind.

Like all relationships, the parent teacher relationship is a dynamic. What one does affects the other, but the person who is most impacted is the child. What parents and teachers need to understand is that educational success is dependent on many factors: the child's self-perception, his desire to learn, and the ability of parents and teacher to engage him in a way that recognizes his needs, interests and motivates him from within.

We know that struggles at home and school impact how he feels about himself, the world and his ability to meet new challenges, academic and otherwise. This alone should underscore the significance of the parent teacher alliance, but often parents and teachers do not communicate often enough to address academic or behavioral issues at school as they emerge.

Frequently this deficit in communicating can have parents and teachers to become adversarial, focus on the wrong things or just fail to take advantage of the influence they have together.  "Parental involvement, in almost any form, produces measurable gains in student achievement" (Dixon, 1992, p. 16).  The concept of parental involvement with the student and the school is a vital one and can produce great rewards for all concerned. However, it has been found that schools do not always know what the term parental involvement really means (Vandergrift & Greene, 1992).  According to Vandergrift and Greene, there are two key elements that work together to make up the concept of parental involvement.

One of these is a level of commitment to parental support. This includes such things as encouraging the student, being sympathetic, reassuring, and understanding. The other element needed is a level of parental activity and participation, such as doing something that is observable. "This combination of level of commitment and active participation is what makes an involved parent" (Vandergrift & Greene, p. 57).

The T.I.C.E.P. program, which provides daily contact from teacher to parent, is perhaps the greatest tool that teachers and school administrators have to improve parental involvement as well as enhancing teacher performance.
